Altar, St Mary's Cathedral

Halfpenny subscription by the poor Catholics of Tyneside largely paid for St Mary's Cathedral, whose 200-foot tower was added after Pugin's death. The stained glass windows, including the great central East window that depict Christ's descent from Jesse, were made by William Wailes to Pugin's designs. According to a site containing a virtual tour of the city (see below), the cathedral contains "a range of encaustic floor tiles by Minton's, probably dating from the original period of construction" [JB].
