Halfpenny subscription by the poor Catholics of Tyneside largely paid for St Mary's Cathedral, which received cathedral status in 1850. The 200-foot spire was added in 1872 by local architects Dunn & Hansom. Many of the stained glass windows (including the great central East window, showing Christ's descent from Jesse) were made by William Wailes to Pugin's designs [JB].
