St Mary's Cathedral
A.W.N. Pugin (1812-1852)
1842-44
Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Halfpenny subscription by the poor Catholics of Tyneside largely paid for St Mary's Cathedral, which received cathedral status in 1850. Many of the stained glass windows (including the great central East window, showing Christ's descent from Jesse) were made by William Wailes to Pugin's designs [JB].
The 200-foot spire was added in 1872 by local architects Dunn & Hansom.
