Peter's Denial of Christ

William Wailes (1808-1881)

Stained glass

South aisle, fourth window, St Peter's Church

Bournemouth

The last of the four matching south aisle windows installed here, before the rest of the church was built, and dealing with St Peter, to whom the church was dedicated. This is the episode Jesus foretold, in which Peter, fearful of repercussions, denies knowing him when he is taken for questioning. Peter's human frailty is shown vividly here, and he weeps bitterly when he realises it himself. But the episode turns out to be an important stage on his journey of faith.
