South Aisle (1) window of St Paul's Church, Hersham, Surrey, by Clayton & Bell. 1887 (see Eberhard). This window, in memory of Blanche Brooking, depicts the first of several miracles said to have been performed by St Peter himself, when he cured a lame man in the name of Jesus. The man's crutch can be seen on the ground beside him; he was known to the bystanders as the beggar who sat "at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him" (Acts 3, 10). In the left-hand panel, shown above, two men and two women, one with a babe in arms and one with an older child, do indeed look on in astonishment as Peter takes the man by the hand and helps him to rise up. Their reaction is important, because the episode led to many conversions. This is another ideal choice of subject for a church dedicated to St Peter.
