According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, the Sutlej River is the “longest of the five tributaries of the Indus River that give the Punjab (meaning ‘Five Rivers’) its name.” Its significance in the history of the British Empire lies in the fact that the Battle of Mudki (18 December 1845), between the forces in which many officers of the British East India Company died, played a role in the conquest of the Sikh Empire of the Punjab (Wikeprdia).
