Introduction
“Lilian Simpson was the contemporary in Edward Lanteri's modeling classes at South Kensington of Florence Steele, Margaret Giles, Ruby Levick, Esther Moore and Gwendolyn Williams. Her design for a book cover in low relief had won her a gold medal in the National Art Competition of 1894. It was in Italy on the traveling studentship which accompanied the award that she died of typhoid fever in 1897, aged twenty-six.” — Susan Beattie
