Kenneth was the son of Sir Alexander Matheson, a wealthy man who had land in Inverness as well as rural estates. It would have been natural for him to give this commission to Munro, "one of the few Inverness artists with an international reputation" ("Kenneth James Matheson"). The confident-looking little boy, so different from his sister in the way he holds himself, would become the 1st Baronet of Lochalsh. A street in Inverness is called after him.
