An open book lies at the top [click here to see], a favourite design in Victorian times, suggesting the Bible and faith in the resurrection. But, as Simon Edwards says, "the inscription has been completely obliterated by 150 years of acid rain and weathering." It is sad to see the famous sculptor's gravestone in such a state.
