William Rathbone (1819-1902) was another Liverpudlian who used his profits as a merchant for philanthropic purposes. He was, as the bronze plaque on his monument states, an Honorary Freeman and MP for Liverpool and later an MP for Caernarvonshire (in Wales). The plaque continues: "A guardian of the poor in Liverpool for thirty-five years. A founder of the University of Liverpool and of the University of Wales. Instituted the training school for nurses and brought trained nurses into the homes of the poor and suffering first in Liverpool and later throughout the country." [continued below]
