Queen Victoria with Prince Arthur. Signed and dated 1850. Franz Xaver Winterhalter. Oil on canvas. 59.5 x 75.1 cm. © His Majesty King Charles III 2022. RCIN 405963. Courtesy of the Royal Collection Trust. [Click on the image to enlarge it.]

The setting of this delightful mother-and-infant portrait is the Upper Terrace of Osborne House, with one of Ludwig Grüner's grand vases in the background, and the balustrade and sea visible beyond it. The lacy bonnets and copiously flounced dresses of both the Queen and Prince Arthur are delicately patterned in pastels and the Queen looks adoringly at the latest addition to her family (who was, by all accounts, a particular favourite).
