At this time, Winterhalter was engaged as court painter to Louis-Philippe of France, in the short-lived "July Monarchy" in France, but Queen Victorian prevailed upon him to give the artist time to paint this large canvas of her young family for Osborne, where it can still be seen, in the dining room. There were sittings from that October to the following January at Windsor Castle, and the finished work pleased the Queen greatly. It remained one of her favourite portraits. — Jacqueline Banerjee.
