Lady Curzon swept into the room, a vision of beauty in the palest of lilac gowns. She carried me off to the drawing-room, and by her ready tact and sympathy soon dispelled my nervousness and made the way smooth. What an ideal wife for a Viceroy, I thought! She was looking extremely well, not in the least fatigued; and when I asked her if she did not feel the effects of the Durbar she said that work was meat and drink to her. [173]
