Hamilton Beck was born in Rochester, New York, and graduated from Cornell University with a Ph.D. in German literature in 1980. For the next 16 years, he taught German at a variety of colleges and universities in the United States. In 1996, he went to Moldova to teach English as a foreign language under the auspices of the Soros Foundation. Since 2001 he has been teaching English at the American Academy of Foreign Languages in Moscow, Russia. His publications include:
