Rumsey arms mosaic over the Annunciation window, Romsey Abbey, Hampshire, by James Powell and Sons, 1901. The stained glass window itself, placed here by “his sorrowing widow,” is in memory of Almaric Rumsey, a professor of Indian jurisrudence of Lincoln’s Inn, born 31 December 1825 and died 8 April 1899, but Rumsey's connection to Romsey seems tenuous: perhaps the location was chosen because of some links in his early family history. At any rate, this design, with the family coat of arms, is an interesting example of James Powell and Sons' use of the opus sectile process for heraldic work. [Click on the image to enlarge it.]
