St Catherine and St Alban
Designer: William Butterfield
Maker: Alexander Gibbs

Gibbs was also asked to replace Alfred Gerente's south aisle windows, featuring individual saints. Here, St Catherine holds a miniature of the spiked wheel associated with her martyrdom (which miraculously broke, so that she then had to be beheaded), and St Alban is identified by his Roman clothes and sandals. He carries the sword with which he was martyred, as well as the palm of frond which distinguishes Christian martyrs. Butterfield's colourful mosaic-like design is evident in all these windows.
