Twenty-one illustrations for Oliver Twist by F. W. Pailthorpe for the 1838 three-volume Richard Bentley (first) edition. All illustrations are keyed to the three 1838 volumes.

Commentary: A Distinct Bias towards the "First Stage"

Although the Bentley triple-decker of Oliver Twist divides Oliver's "Adventures" into three roughly equal parts, Pailthorpe was most engaged with the workhouse, undertaker's, and thieves' kitchen narratives from the first volume: clearly ten of the twenty-one "Extra" illustrations cover events from Bumble's taking Oliver from Mrs. Mann's to the workhouse in the opening chapters to Sikes's transporting his unwilling accomplice to the robbery in Chertsey, Surrey, in Chapter XXI, "The Expedition."
