Lady Mason leaving the Court
John Everett Millais
Wood engraving by the Dalziels
6½ x 4¼ inches
Anthony Trollope, Orley Farm, Vol 2, pictorial frontispiece.
A proleptic design which establishes volume two’s focus on Lady Mason’s trial and its outcome. The sombre black costumes have an emotional resonance, more suggestive of a funeral than a legal hearing. However, the funereal atmosphere is an accurate showing of the consequences before the event, which lead to the character’s exile from society: essentially a sort of death.
