Footsteps in the corridor
John Everett Millais
Wood engraving by the Dalziels
6¼ x 4¼ inches
Anthony Trollope,Orley Farm, Vol 1, facing p. 240.
An image of Madeline Staveley’s unhappiness following her love-tryst with Peregrine. The image exemplifies Millais’s interest in female psychology and contrasts with Lady Mason’s suffering. Trollope describes her state of mind as a matter of ‘skulking’ (p.241), but the illustrator invests her figure with an intense melancholy which acts, typically, to expand the author’s range of implication.
