Sitting above the list of seven color plates by Harold Copping, the scene realized is the frail Paul Dombey in a wheel-chair on the rocky beach at Brighton accompanied by his sister Florence. Both are well-dressed middle-class children, but their clothing more befits a late nineteenth-century setting. Initially, upon his arrival at Mrs. Pipchin's boarding-house for children in Brighton, Paul is sickly. But as the weeks go by, the bracing sea air acts as a tonic; although not any stronger, Paul looks healthier. "A little carriage was therefore got for him, in which he could be wheeled down to the beach, where he would pass the greater part of the day. . . . . To have Florence sitting by his side, reading or talking to him, whilst the fresh salt wind blew about him, and the little waves rippled up under the wheels of his carriage seemed to perfectly content little Paul" (180).
