From Dickens' Dream Children, p. 221, at the head of Mary Angela Dickens's thirteenth chapter, "Poor Jo, The Crossing-Sweeper"; realizing a scene in the Holborn street between the police, the merchant, and the indigent crossing-sweeper, "ugly and dirty and ignorant" (222), but worthy of our sympathy, nonetheless, having been turned away from his livelihood, the crossing.
