Gladstone to Greece: Now it's your turn!
Greek independence from Turkey was one of the great nineteenth-century liberal causes, but it conflicted with Britain’s need to prop up the Turkish empire as a buffer against the Russian empire. Here Boucher here accuses William Gladstone of encouraging a young, naive figure representing Greece to a revolt that will result in the same kind of Turkish massacres of Christians in other Turkish territories.
