"Officially the commission was warded to Honeyman and Keppie, but because of the unpromising nature of the job with its difficult site and lack of money as well as the patronage of Newbury, Mackintosh seems to have had a relatively free hand. This at the age of 28 and while still only a junior at the firm. The Library was completed two years after the drawings for the first phase of the School, and it shows Mackintosh's work at its mature peak" (Moffat and Baxter, p. 36).
