The drawing for this piece is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, dated 1860. J. P. Seddon, brother of the painter Thomas Seddon, was a prolific designer of furniture, ceramics and tiles although he trained and practised as an architect. He was for a short time a colleague of E. W. Godwin and was close friends with many of the Pre-Raphaelites, especially Ford Madox Brown and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Seddon was also well acquainted with William Morris and exhibited his best known piece King René's Honeymoon cabinet on the Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. stand at the London International Exhibition in 1862. Much of his early furniture was made by the firm founded by his grandfather, which had supplied furniture to Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace.
