The exhibition label points out that “this vase is a monumental example of the brown stoneware Chaplet produced for Haviland in the 1880s. Inspired by rustic European folk pottery, these pieces often incorporated traditional themes of country life. The rooster on this vase is a Gallic cokerell, a national emblem of France.”
