Binding by Walter Crane. 9 x 12½ inches; engraved and printed in colour by Edmund Evans. One of Crane’s neo-classical designs in which figurative elements are combined with the purely decorative. The association of music and flight is suggested by the images of swifts and of a crane, languidly eating a fish, in the centre. Playful, elegant, ornamental in effect and cleverly linked with the book’s contents, this is one of the artist’s most accomplished covers.
